Sleeping Shoulders

Emiddio Vasquez is a Cypriot-Dominican producer, dj and artist. Ever since engaging with music as a classical guitar and tuba player, his commitment to sound has seeped through various genres and styles, hi- mid- and lo- brow aesthetics, with aliases including m.e.d.o, Joralsky and Oswaldo III. Over the last years he has curated numerous sound events series and co-founded two seminal Cypriot-raised parties: C'est Demon! and Programmed for Love (P4L).

As a composer he has done commissioned international work for radio, film, theater and dance, with live appearances in US and throughout Europe including venues like Griessmuehle, HKW and Venice Biennale. His most recent work will be a sonic research on materiality. As of 2018 he runs the record label Moneda, a label, sound event series and printing house initiative that flirts critically with the aesthetics of money.

This is a record about sleep and the lack thereof. Recorded over three weekends in London April 2016, "Sleeping Shoulders" is the result of hours of improvisation using pedals, an electric piano and a guitar.

These improvised ambient sessions best capture Emiddio Vasquez's early music output as m.e.d.o, which revolves around layering live recorded loops in such a way that musical phrases emerge. The name of the album itself points at highway shoulders that drivers use to rest - or even to sleep - during a long trip. In this sense, the album songs mark different stops along that journey.
